“Turning the Wheels of Zambia’s Economy”

The National Council for Construction would like to invite the Construction Industry Stakeholders and the General Public to the Construction “Indaba” under the theme: “Turning the Wheels of Zambia’s Economy” on November 30, 2007 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

The Construction ‘Indaba’ – which is a one-day- conference aims at bringing together stakeholders of the construction industry, and the general public, to discuss matters regarding the construction industry.

Construction affects all facets of society and livelihood. As a basic human need, shelter is vital to sustaining the day to day life and work of people; water and sanitation promote and preserve a healthy environment; roads, railways and airfields facilitate movement from one location to another; telecommunication networks enable people and businesses to communicate faster and cheaply; and, power supply supports production in various sectors of the economy.  To achieve this, construction is inevitable.

The main elements of the conference will include an outline of the status of the industry; the potential within the industry; opportunities for construction; and, the challenges experienced in the sector.

It is expected that at the end of the conference, stakeholders will map a way forward for the enhancement of construction as an engine of growth that can accelerate economic development.

A number of Guests have been invited to participate at this event, however, interested members of the public should contact the NCC Secretariat to register as participants. Please note that only registered and confirmed individuals will be allowed to participate.

       Construction  Indaba  brief

Construction lies at the centre of all economic development as it facilitates the provision of infrastructure and services. Construction activity also provides indications of economic performance and is an engine for economic growth through wealth and employment creation. Construction is therefore a common denominator in all development activities.

Construction affects all facets of society and livelihood. As a basic human need, shelter is vital to sustaining the day to day life and work of people; water and sanitation promote and preserve a healthy environment; roads, railways and airfields facilitate movement of people and goods from one location to another; telecommunication networks enable people and businesses to communicate faster and cheaply; and, power supply supports production in various sectors of the economy.  To achieve this, construction is inevitable.

In Zambia, the construction industry plays a very active role in the roads and building development. Lately, opportunities have emerged in the energy and mining sectors. The main players in the industry are Architects, Engineers, Surveyors, Contractors and, most importantly, the Clients. The Construction industry may not be as prominent in the economic radar yet it is very significant to the attainment of development aspirations.

The construction industry has over the past few years recorded a consistent high growth rate in the Zambian economy mainly due to the steady increase in construction activities around the country. Despite this significance that the construction industry seems to hold, it is rarely given priority as a sector, rather, it is encompassed in other sectors mainly relating to infrastructure such as roads and buildings. However, construction extends beyond roads and buildings and includes the development of all infrastructure and services in other sectors like energy, mining, water and sanitation, telecommunications, agriculture etc.

It is in view of this that the National Council for Construction is organizing a Construction ‘Indaba’ – a one-day conference – aimed at bringing together stakeholders of the construction industry, including the public, to discuss matters regarding construction.

The main elements of the conference include an outline of the status of the industry; the potential within the industry; opportunities for construction; and, the challenges experienced in the sector.

It is expected that at the end of the conference, stakeholders will map a way forward for the enhancement of construction as an engine of growth that can accelerate economic development.
